Ares is known as the Greek Deity of war, courage, bloodlust, and civil order. His parents are recorded as being Zeus and Hera making him one of the 12 Olympians. In ancient art he was either depicted as a mature, bearded warrior armed for battle or a young man armed with a helm and a spear. 
 
He was romantically entangled with Aphrodite during her marriage with Hephaestus. Together, they had four children (Phobos, Deimos, Eros, and Harmonia). When Aphrodite sought Adonis as a lover, he retaliated by turning into a bear to kill his rival. Ares is also recorded as having slewn Halirrhotius, a son of Poseidon, when he attempted to violate one of Ares' daughters. 
 
His sacred animals are serpents (including dragons), and certain birds such as vultures. One of his most notable serpents was the Colchian Dragon that was sent to guard the Golden Fleece. Other symbols of Ares include boars, dogs, wolves, spears, a burning torch, his peaked warrior helm, and swords. He is also attributed to any plant with thorns.
